WORK VISIT FROM MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL TO BRUNEI DARUSSALAM METEOROLOGICAL DEPARTMENT

Thursday, October 25, 2018 - A total of 9 Members of the Legislative Council (LegCo) made a work visit to the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department (BDMD) at Kampong Anggerek Desa.
The objective of the working visit is to look closely at weather systems at the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department as well as to understand the functions and roles of the department in providing weather and information as preparation for their meeting with the Ministry of Communications on 26th November 2018.
The work visit was initiated at the Brunei Darussalam Meteorological Department's Headquarters, where the delegation was brought to see one of the automatic weather observation system stations.The LegCo members then proceeded to the Weather Forecast Centre at the Brunei International Airport explore the processes and facilities involved in the provision of weather forecasts, weather advisory and warning to users such as government agencies and public. The delegation was exposed to how weather data and information were analyzed for the provision of weather forecasts by the Meteorologist on duty.
The delegation also visit the Doppler Weather Surveillance Radar site used by the BDMD in monitoring the weather events, movements and evolution of the local weather system. The delegation ended their visit at one of the wind monitoring stations called the Low Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS) located at the Perindustrian Lambak Kanan. The LLWAS system is a system that provides wind shear warning to airplanes that intended to land or depart from the Brunei International Airport. The delegation was also able to see the tower which is equipped with tools to detect wind information.
